I just went with the flow
I decided, because it was only going to be 34 degrees out yesterday that perhaps I should get an early start to the day then come back to the hotel and hang out by the pool. Sounded like an excellent idea!
Went for my fabulous, amazing breakfast - yogurt and granola followed by watermelon. Second course eggs and bacon. Delicious!
Left here and just to give you an idea of why I don't have mimosas in the morning I took a few pictures of the hazards of walking in Bangkok.
The sidewalks are narrow to begin with and then they take away half of it for a sewer and install some pipes on the other half.
Then there's the cement poles which I think have electrical guts in them right in the middle and patched so that the whole surrounding area is a mound of cement. You have to keep your wits about you.
I took the sky train to Terminal 21, it's a mall with a travel theme. Each floor is supposedly like you are visiting that country - sounded hokey and it was. The only thing I bought was a bottle of water.
Santa Claus was at the entrance- not sure if it's his nose of the baseball cap but definitely a little off.
I think this is supposed to be snow but they had all these miniature Santa's hanging from the top.
It was an odd concept and other than the weird statues and the floor marker telling you what country you were in there was nothing else to indicate that you were in Britain or Japan or USA. I lasted about 20 minutes and thought this is too lame!
Got out my trusty map and decided to head to Silom area. I had read that they were opening a walking street today - a new concept for Bangkok. I had to take the subway, lined up for my ticket and got a token. The sky train gives you a card and you scan it to get in and then insert it into a machine to get out at your stop. A token was new to me. So, I watched and same thing - scan the token. I scanned my token and proceeded. Every stop here is huge with at least three lines coming and going. I knew I had to go to number 1 platform so I followed the signs for awhile then followed the crowd --- right to the exit. I tried to scan my token at the machine and a maintenance worker was there - he pointed to the token slot and in it went. Then 30 seconds later I realized I was out of the system. Duh ...I went back and he was still there - he motioned to the ticket office. I went over and explained what I had done, the maintenance man came over and also explained. Then the supervisor came. I should have just chalked it up to the heat and bought another ticket but the supervisor let me in through a secret gate . He asked me where I was going and walked me to the train. I asked him how I was going to get out at Silom - he said, mai pen rai (don't worry) and held up his phone. Humm - he called someone at Silom, all I understood was farang (tourist) and he said in English his friend would help me! Ok great, who's your friend I thought. Anyhow, it all worked out - I got to Silom and made my way to the exit and sure enough his friend was there - he opened his secret gate for me and off I went! As I was walking with the supervisor I thought you idiot you should have just bought another ticket and carried on but my initial reaction was to explain. At the time I did not think that the ticket only cost about 50 cents.
Sure enough the street was blocked off, tons of cops, as you can see and metal detectors to walk thorough. Not exactly your Sunday stroll in the street as I thought. But actually it was very nice, turns out though that it was 90 percent food. Seeing as how I had a huge breakfast I just wandered. Had to buy some cashews tho - which turned out to be my dinner.
I came back to the hotel with good intentions of going to the pool but once I sat down in the air con I decided to watch Mrs. Maisel ....only had two episodes to complete season three so that was my evening.
I am going to go to the Pratumam area this morning and check it out!
