Just another day in BKK


The flower cart came by as I was waiting on the street 

Trying to get a taxi and have them use the meter has now my become my biggest challenge . I must have waited outside yesterday morning for 10 minutes - some taxis went by and didn't even stop. Two refused to use the meter. Finally a tuk tuk came by and he wanted 300 baht, off he went, another one quickly pulled up and we agreed on 150 baht to Bopae Tower in Phratumam.
 The guy was a riot, he sang the whole way at the top of his voice, weaving in and out of traffic and entertaining all the motorcycle drivers around us at red lights. I told him he had a good voice and he said he plays the guitar and is a freestyle singer - never heard of that but it suited him.

I strolled around Bopae for a few hours, it was stinking hot but not crowded which was nice. I knew I was close to Khao San Road and no trip to Bangkok is complete without stopping by . I stayed there in 1991 and paid about 6 dollars a night at the Merry V Guesthouse. Every backpacker that comes to Bangkok heads there. It is or was a very cheap place to stay, a good place to buy tickets onward, get visas and connect with fellow travelers. It has changed over the past few decades. Definitely gone upscale. Still has a friendly vibe, still has reasonable rooms and cheap food. Still has the odd old fart hanging out and drinking beer all day.



I didn't feel like dealing with the traffic so walked down to the river, took a boat to the Skytrain and then the train back to Sukhumvit. Took about an hour and  a half.  Still hot but at least the river provided a bit of a breeze.

Here they are now with their Christmas best on!

We headed out to the Albert Cuyp Market first thing - we walked by a restaurant that said bacon and eggs and we were in it like a flash! The guy was super nice and we both ordered breakfast. It was interesting because the plate had toast on it the bottom then we think they cooked the bacon and then cooked eggs right on top of the bacon. Sounds odd but it was good - after I pulled the bacon apart from the egg and separated it all!  Tiki says it looked like a bacon and egg pizza! The owner talked us into splitting a piece of apple cake that he had just brought out of the kitchen - it was also very good!!! Freshly baked apple cake! A whole stand of licorice! Pigeon watching me take every bite! Only the Dutch could turn a bike into a table!  Delicious! How small can the cars get! Like the size of a recycling bin! Anne Franks door! Flowers are in bloom! Paris - Day 2 somehow got lost in the fray! So, it's out of order!

Woops : I forgot to post these yesterday from a local chocolate store. Not sure the history of these but I first had them in Brittany - they are so good! Pignouf Geant  only 225.00 Euros Our coronavirus plan is formulating - we decided to go to the museums first thing to avoid the crowds. First stop today was Sainte Chappelle: Yellow Alert for Flood warnings on the Seine Gangways to nowhere!

What a long haul!

Oy Vey, Arrived in Bangkok at zero dark thirty this morning just in time to see a beautiful sunrise. My picture does not do it justice. The first leg from Toronto to Dubai was great. I cannot say enough about the service provided by Air Canada. Everyone was very nice and the food was excellent. Even the food in the Maple Leaf Lounge was tasty and I am not saying that because of the three glasses of wine I had. Excellent wine selection ! Maple Leaf Lounge.  My space for the 13 + hours! Arrived In Dubai somewhat refreshed as I did manage to sleep a little. On the way to the lounge I spotted the Brioche Doree  - United Arab Emerites has every major  chain store and restaurant in the world, in my opinion these are the McDonalds of patisseries from France. I looked at a few things along the way in the multitude of duty free stores but the prices did not seem that great. No room for an almond croissant! M & M's, gummies ...
