Happy Lunar New Year ......and then depression set in .....
I asked what I could bring and was told a cake. Sumana said to get the cake from S & P bakery. I took Grab to the bakery and got the cake - it was labelled as a black forest cake but as with everything here - same same but different! It did have one cherry on it and whipped cream. I stood outside in 37 degree weather with it waiting for Sumana. Then spent an hour in the car getting to the dinner. Once I got there I handed it to the hostess and said that it needed to go in the fridge. Nope, it sat on the counter. The house was huge, well manicured and had no furniture to speak of inside. The host is a university Chemistry professor and most of the guests were profs so this was a very educated group. When we arrived there was chicken, pork and noodles all sitting on a sidetable. There were also three curry dishes - fish, pork and vegetable. There was also, thank god, a huge rice cooker full of brown organic rice. I had some noodles with curry sauce and lots of rice. We had fruit cups in plastic cups - dragon fruit, papaya, golden pear . Did I mention that we were eating off of plastic lace placemats and drinking either sprite, fanta or coke! Sumana asked me where the cake was - I said - it's over there and pointed to the counter. She went and got it. I had the girl write Happy New Year on the cake and she wrote it as HAPPY NEWYEAR. I should have looked at it at the bakery! Anyhow, we all had a piece of cake but half way through serving it they turned on the TV and they all watched a Thai soap opera. I wasn't sure if it was a dream or a farse. No one died from the whipped cream that had been sitting out for hours.......
With the onset of Wuyan virus and considering that there are 19 flights a week from Wuyan to Chiang Mai this virus has been more than worrisome. I bought a mask last week but then found out on Saturday that they are only good for 8 hours. So, I spent Monday looking for another one - sold out everywhere I went. Yesterday I binge watched REVENGE all day! It is a Netflix series, 4 seasons, riveting comes to mind as a description. So, today I decided I would watch 2 episodes then get out of here. I went to a patisserie that I read about before I got here and have walked by a dozen times. I knew that the pastries would be good and I was saving it for a "rainy" (no rain here) day. I arrived to see that it was closed. That's when the depression set in!!
Perhaps I'll call "the boss" and tell him/her that I do not comprehend!!!
I walked to Movenpick and ordered an ice cappuccino - it was delicious!
I went in search of a watch in the market - found one in the back room behind a curtain! It was something like being in a movie - I followed this guy behind a curtain, down a short hallway and into a room full of steel drawers.......ahhhhhh

Interesting because the message is in both Thai and English but only the ABC's, no Thai symbols. Was getting hungry so went in search of dinner! |
