Saturday March 7th BRUGGE, BELGIUM

I love Brugge and have made a point to try and get here every time I visit the EU. What's not to like, there are over 200 chocolate stores in this little town!
We drove to the train station and parked the car as there is no parking within the town. They offered all day parking and a bus back and forth for 5.50 Euros.
Our day started by a women on the bus telling us to get off and go to the market then to walk into town ...so we only rode the bus one stop and jumped off!

Live chickens:

Lots of cheese:

And cooked chickens!

And of course waffles: which we tried,

We had booked a walking tour for 10:30. Some pics from our tour.

We meet a Belgium dog named Ricky who also liked waffles!

The main square:

The house on the left was built in 1669! The "steps" on the facade were an indication of the families wealth. The house on the right is called the White house and they are all over the city. They were built by wealthy people for the poor people. They built them as a type of insurance policy to make sure they went up instead of down.

A relatively new bridge, a hundred years old, built from gravestones

Brugge was once a very important port for Belgium but the canals became silted in and the boats all had to be rerouted to Antwerp or Rotterdam.
Houses were marked with animals or symbols as a directional aid before street names. This is the house with the golden spider.

If you have seen the movie IN BRUGGE then this fountain will be familiar to you, if not then it's just a nice fountain and was put there in memory of a queen.

My favorite chocolate store, been going to it since 1984 ...ahhhhh

Getting ready for Easter.
Our lunch!

Belgium waffles - note the new purse!

Our dinner: Belgium frites and frite sauce!!

We left Brugge about 4 - had a difficult time getting out of the parking garage as the machine did not want to take Tikis card. Finally as the line up behind us was growing and nobody seemed to be able to assist us i pressed the HELP button! A voice came on and asked what the problem was in perfect English - Tiki explained and he said " use the machine on the left"  It was that simple!

We stopped outside the garage to set the GP to Amsterdam and off we went!
